LABORATORY CODE OF CONDUCT
Laboratory Code of Conduct: Anatomy and Physiology
- All Laboratories are mandatory and required for graduation from course.
- Closed toe shoes only please. Please note that some labs require movement. Jackets and Bags should be left outside lab room.
- Items to bring to lab: Notebook, handouts, pencils
- Do not eat, drink, handle contact lenses, store food or apply cosmetics or lip balm in the laboratory.
- Restrain long hair, loose clothing and dangling jewelry.
- Upon entering the laboratory, locate exits, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eye wash station, first aid kit, broken glass containers, blade container, clean up material for spills and allocated specimen trash bag.
- Students who may have medical conditions that might necessitate special precautions in the laboratory must inform the instructor immediately.
- Wearing contact lenses in the laboratory is inadvisable because they do not provide eye protection and may trap material on the surface of the eye. Soft contact lenses may absorb volatile chemicals. If possible wear regular eye glasses instead. (A&P will not use volatile chemicals but spray from preservative is possible)
- Use safety glasses in all experiments involving liquids, aerosols, vapors and gases.
- Decontaminate all surfaces at the beginning and the end of each lab. Use disinfectant. Clean up all spills with disinfectant provided.
- No preserved material from specimens may be taken home or disposed of in regular trash. All material should be disposed of in allocated specimen trash bag.
- Clean up and dispose of all preserved material. Do not leave ‘bits’ in the sink. Clean up all sink areas with disinfectant and dispose of preserved material in allocated trash bag.
- Clean all dissection equipment with hot soapy water or disinfectant.
- Properly label all glassware and slides.
- Mouth pipetting is prohibited.
- Wear disposable gloves when handling body fluids/preserved specimens. Cover open cuts with sterile bandage before putting on gloves. Wash hands thoroughly after removing gloves.
- Report all spills or accidents no matter how minor, to the instructor.
- Never work alone in the laboratory.
- Wash hands and remove protective clothing before leaving the lab.
